TGS Music Department shines at The Big SingEarlier this week the four Takapuna Grammar School choirs ventured over the bridge to compete at the annual Big Sing competition. The Auckland’s festival is held at the Auckland Town Hall and showcases over 77 choirs participating each year. The TakaCrooners (junior girls choir), Sultans of Sing (all comers boys choir), Leonessa (auditioned girls choir), and Takapuna Grammar School Chorale (Premier Mixed choir) attended this year, and each performed a 10-minute recital to the adjudicator and sold-out audience at the Town Hall.
Later in the week, the awards ceremony celebrating the top choirs was held. The three Head Choristers Volkan Ozyurteri, Felicity Lewis, and Ethan Alicalas, along with Isabella Bouwer and Choral Director Mr Jacob Moore attended. The Takapuna Grammar School Chorale was awarded the runner-up for the “Leo Pasifika Award” for “Best Performance of a Single Work Using a Pasifika Text”. The award was collected by TGS Chorale Head Chorister, Volkan, and Leonessa Head Chorister, Felicity. The four choirs have done an exceptional job, excelling further and out-shining their previous years’ performances.
The four choirs received their certificates too. The TGS Chorale won a Distinction, being one of the only 11 choirs out of the Auckland region to do so! Leonesa received Highly Commended, and Sultans of Sing and TakaCrooners received Commended.
Now the choirs will start working on new repertoire to build on their skills, and to prepare for future events such as the potential of being selected into The Big Sing Nation Finale held in Dunedin this year.
The Choirs would all like to thank their choral directors Mr Jacob Moore and Ms Keani Taruia-Pora, Mr Andrew Murphy (HOD Music), Mrs Charlett-Green and Mrs Cynthia Jaques for their organisation, admin, and constant support for all of these choirs.
