Year 9 Social Studies Marae Trips in May 2018
As part of the Year 9 Social Studies curriculum the students study early New Zealand History and the Impacts of and Perspectives on the Treaty of Waitangi. To enhance their understanding of Tikanga Maori and Marae customs they will be visiting The Navy Marae - Te Taua Moana Marae and Bastion Point Marae - Orakei Marae.
While there the students will participate in powhiri which will include performing the waiata, E hara, that they will learn in class. The Marae educational personnel will speak to the students about Marae customs, protocols and the history of the local area.
This trip aims to increase the students' understanding of the impacts of the Treaty of Waitangi on society at the time of the signing as well as more modern impacts.
The dates for each class to visit the Marae are:
Group 1: Wednesday 9 May Hihi, Tui, Whio, Kea
Group 2: Thursday 10 May Huia, Takahe, Kiwi
Group 3: Friday 11 May Weka, Moa, Ruru, Torea
