Massey University Molecular Day
Last week we had 22 enthusiastic, year 12 and year 13 Biology students attended the Massey Molecular day at Massey University. These students were joined by students from Westlake Boys High School and Rodney College.
This was an excellent opportunity to experience the techniques involved in DNA Technology. Students were taught how to use pipettes as they would be drawing up small volumes of solutions in the practical set-up. They were also taught how to place DNA samples in a gel for the Gel Electrophoresis which would eventually produce a band of DNA segments.
There were undergraduate and post-graduate students in attendance to assist the students throughout the day. Time was also set aside for these students to speak to all the high school students about their areas of studies in Science.
