TGS Chess = Checkmate!
Last week the TGS A Chess team won the regional (North Shore) qualifying inter-schools Chess event. TGS entered three teams (A, B & C) each consisting of 4 players and a reserve.
The competition consisted of 6 rounds where each of the 4 players in a team played a match against a team from another school. The top three schools that emerged after 5 rounds were Rangitoto A, Kristen A and TGS A.
The last round saw TGS A just nudge Kristen out of the lead by half a point! It was a very close match. One of the highlights was Hayden Steele winning 6/6 matches. The A team are now awaiting their gold medals with their names currently being engraved and arriving at school soon!
Next, it's off to the Nationals on the 23-24th September, and we'll be training hard for it. On Mondays during lunch time any student interested in Chess is welcome to join us upstairs in the Library. The Chess Club will be holding a school wide tournament soon, so students will soon hear more about it...watch this space!
