What is Mathematics and Statistics about?

Mathematics is the language of patterns, logic, and problem-solving.

At its heart, mathematics is about exploring the relationships, rules and patterns generated by numbers and shapes.  Mathematics helps us make sense of the world by identifying these patterns and relationships and how they might be used to support humanity's body of knowledge and innovation.

Statistics, a key part of this learning, focuses on understanding patterns in data and using them to make informed decisions.

Students learn to use symbols, graphs, and models to represent real-life and imagined situations. These tools help them investigate everything from everyday problems to global issues, drawing on contexts like science, technology, health, the environment, and economics.

Why study Mathematics and Statistics?

Mathematics builds powerful thinking skills for life.

By studying mathematics and statistics, students learn to think creatively, logically, and strategically. They develop the ability to solve problems, analyse information, and communicate ideas clearly and accurately.

Maths helps students become confident decision-makers. Students learn the essential life skills of estimation, calculation, modelling, and interpreting results. Such skills are transferable, marketable, essential and empowering.

Mathematics is not merely about getting the right answer - although that is important - but also it is  about understanding what works and why and how to apply this understanding in the real world.

Mathematics - Years 9 & 10 and NCEA Level 1

Mathematics at Takapuna Grammar School equips students with essential skills in number, algebra, measurement, geometry, probability and data. Courses are designed to develop confidence, accuracy, and flexibility in solving real-world problems. Students learn to think critically and communicate mathematical ideas clearly - such skills support success across all subjects and future pathways.

These courses are undertaken by all students in Years 9, 10 and 11.

Mathematics and Statistics - NCEA Levels 2 and 3

This course blends mathematical reasoning with statistical thinking. Students investigate patterns in numbers and data, learning to model situations, interpret results, and make informed decisions. It is a practical and relevant course that connects to science, business, health, and everyday life.

Mathematics and Statistics is the appropriate option for students interested in applying maths to real-world contexts and developing analytical skills for study and work.

Mathematics and Calculus - NCEA Levels 2 and 3

Mathematics and Calculus is designed for students who enjoy abstract thinking and problem-solving at a high level. The course focuses on algebra, functions, and calculus which are key tools for understanding how to manage, manipulate and use rates of change, trigonometry and imaginary numbers. This course is essential for students aiming for careers in engineering, physics, computer science, economics and other mathematically intensive fields.

It is a rigorous and rewarding pathway for those who enjoy mathematics and want to use mathematics to support tertiary study and future careers.
