Juniors

Junior Curriculum

The curriculum and subjects offered to junior students reflect the Takapuna Grammar School Charter which acknowledges the academic history of the school and its local curriculum. Within the curriculum there will be opportunities throughout the year to participate in inquiry based projects. These will be designed to ensure that learning skills are integrated and connected to the students’ world and experiences. 

Year 9 Programme

The Year 9 Programme at Takapuna Grammar School is an introductory course where students experience all Learning areas of the New Zealand Curriculum.

All students will study the following subjects: 

  • English
  • Health & Physical Education
  • Mathematics
  • Science
  • Social Studies
  • Te toi Tangata - Humanities

In addition to the above subjects students will study from the following learning areas throughout the year:

  • Arts – Dance, Drama, Music and Visual Arts
  • Technology – Design Thinking, Digital Technologies, Food Technology, Resistant Materials, Soft Materials
  • Languages – French, Japanese, Spanish, Te Reo Maori

Extension and support is offered throughout the Junior School. After consultation with Senior staff some students may be eligible for the following courses:

  • Special Education
  • Sports Institute
  • Accelerated Learning Programme
  • Literacy Support

Year 10 Programme

The Year 10 programme at Takapuna Grammar School is an exploratory course which builds on the knowledge gained in Year 9.

All students will study the following subjects:

  • English
  • Health & Physical Education
  • Mathematics
  • Science
  • Social Studies

Note:

In addition it is strongly recommended that students continue with a language in Year 10. All students in Year 9 Accelerate classes should take a language. Students who wish to study a Language in the Senior school, or who are considering International Baccalaureate, must select that Language in Year 10. 

In addition to a Language,  students are able to select up to four semester (two term) courses across the learning areas of Arts, Business and Enterprise and Technology. 

Students in the Year 10 Sports Institute, Literacy or ESOL classes will have the option of studying a Language and two semester courses; or four semester courses.

  • Arts 

    Visual Art, Photography and Digital, Dance Technique, Dance Social. Production and Songwriting, Learn to Play, Music, Drama

  • Business & Enterprise

    Commerce, Financial Literacy

  • Technology 

    Programming, Web Design, Design Thinking, Architecture, Textiles Design, Fashion Design, Product Design, Workshop Craft, Food By Design, The Food Truck

  • Languages

    French, Japanese, Spanish, Te Reo Maori
